Should I be using joist hangers here? I’m building a pergola. The floor is set on top of (3) 4x8 beams. That said… since the joists are supported, are the hangers overkill? The guy helping me with this says we don’t need them. I put one on. Necessary?

Does this column seem removeable or load bearing in garage? I have this post in the middle of the garage that I would love to remove but not sure if it's possible. I plan on having a structural engineer look at it but I figured I'd post here first to get opinions before I spend the money.

Truly don’t know what is going on. So I have been attempting to make a deck but I am truly stumped. I put my joists in and right before lay the decking I go to check to make sure I am square but I am not. The inside width (closest to the house) is 20 feet. The outside width (closest to the yard) is 20’ 4” when square. I squared one side and then laid my joist, when I got to my rim joist I need an extra 4 inches to be square but that causes the outside to be 244” instead of 240.

The first picture is my square side (12,16,20) 2nd is the opposite side that is square (12,16,20) 3rd is the inner measurement. 4th is the outer measurement.

Am I doing this right? I am trying my hand at building a 3 post triangle pergola. I’ve gotten the posts and first beams together. Wanted to see if any more handy or knowledgeable people have any feedback or suggestions…I have only spent like $400 on lumber and material so far so wanting to see if I need to make any big changes/start over before I finish.

Removing an old load bearing post. Looking to get some people's thoughts on the situation I'm dealing with. We recently planned some work. It was meant to be a major renovation, and we had an engineer come in a few times to map out everything. The town didn't have builder plans on file, so they had to recreate the plans from scratch. We had contractors out to price out the job, and when we realized the full renovation was going to be way higher than we could afford, we changed the plan and just focused on some structural repairs, and changes to better support a future layout.

In the photo, you'll see our main floor had this half wall, with a column that ran up to the ceiling on the end of the wall. This was load bearing. We had a new header installed above and were able to remove the post. We plan on taking down the rest of the half wall when we're ready to redo the flooring. But in the meantime, I had to demo some stuff in the basement for more headers, and I found out that the wall directly below the half wall, actually had a post carrying the load from the post we just removed above.

There's a second post in the basement to the right carrying the end of that header that's below the half wall, and it ties in to support the staircase as well. But now I'm trying to figure out if I can remove the basement post in the center of the wall (circled in the 2nd photo). Since the post directly above it is no longer directing weight straight down.

I ran it past my engineer and he came back with "can't hurt to leave it there". The problem is, we could use the extra space, and if I can take that center basement post out, I can push that whole wall back another 8 feet or so. So we'd really love to remove it if we can. The engineer is now giving me the runaround, saying any questions beyond the original agreement would be a new project, and he'd need to come back to measure things and calculate loads. I don't mind paying him for any extra time, but I know for a fact that they measured everything in this area, multiple times now and nothing's changed that they didn't plan and design themselves.

Logic is telling me, that post is no longer doing anything. My GC is also saying it's completely safe to remove. I just would have preferred to get the all-clear from the engineer before I pull it out. Anyone have any idea?

Should I seat pergola post on deck, or on concrete below? Pergola will be 16’x16’, not a heavy design (just polycarb roof panels). 2 corners of pergola will be anchored to house, and the other 2 will be 6”x6” posts.

If I put a bunch of 2”x6”s under the deck surface to screw posts into, strong enough? Or do I have to go down through deck surface to be stable enough?

Thanks for advice.

Should I ask contractor to fix? Paid contractor $7000 to build deck frame. They left this post poking out above deck top and they did not leave me any joists to mount mitered trim and deck steps. Should I ask them to come out and address? If so, what’s the best way for me to ask?
