I've just finished framing a window in a garden room, seeing it in place I think it might be a bit too high. How do I go about lowering it? I added this window frame to an existing wall today. Pretty much nothing is level but it should be fine! The height looked and felt good when I marked it out, but seeing it in place now I think it might be too high. I'm planning on having a desk in front/beside it.

The top of the window was set to be the same height as the planned sliding door (2100mm). The window opening is 1400 x 1100 which has the sill sitting 1000m from the floor.

The standard desk height seems to be around 760mm, so a good height for a window behind a desk seems to be around 800mm.

I haven't ordered the window yet so my options look to be.

Drop the window 200mm - but I'm not sure how to properly drop the height at the top beneath the header. Also will this look odd if the top of the window isn't in line with the door (to be on the wall to the left).

Order the window 1400 x 1300 and drop the sill by 200 - more expensive and the window might look enormous.

For option 1, what is the proper way to frame it to lower drop the height?

How do I close the picture frame. I have to mitre cut board 1, but do I just slice board 2 down the middle? How would I connect that to board 1? Or do I slice board 1? But then my picture frame won’t look as good and I’d have to make a funky cut for board 2.

Where did I go wrong? The walls aren't exactly flush so that causing about 1/8 of an inch on this issue . I'm sure the angle is what did me in.

How can I correct without buying a new board.

Should I worry about these? Located in Seattle area with lots of rain moisture 8-9 months per year. This deck is about 5 years old. Noticing galvanized brackets are starting to rust. I was thinking about adding a few inches of cement to meet the bottom of the post bracket, and maybe shape it so the water drips off the footing better. Also noticed that the siding doesn't come down all the way over the flashing at the ledger board. If it was yours would you make any changes/repairs? Thank you!

Questions about Timbertech Azek PVC stair installation. Hey everyone- we are replacing our existing deck boards with composite (Timbertech Azek Advanced PVC in Coastline) and building a new expansion as well. They just finished framing the new deck and I had some questions.

They attached the PVC riser directly to the stringers without any backer. The Timbertech directions say there should be a backer all the way across- is that correct? I am especially worried because of how wide the stairs are.

It looks like they're attached with nails, not screws.

We thought they were going to make the stairs treads wider because we have older dogs and want our stairs to be less steep. I unfortunately wasn't home today to catch this earlier, but right now the stairs are only set up to be two boards deep. Could they add a backer to each riser to both lengthen the tread and deal with the issues above? Or would that not work because the bottom posts are in the wrong place? It would be great if we could solve two problems at once here.

Appreciate your help!

Am I being too OCD or should I return the wood. Hello all, I decided to start putting the wood down for my front porch today but ran into what I think are some issues, or as the title says, too much OCD. I have about 15 pieces of wood, I tried this with 5. I've labeled the pics with arrows to the issues I'm seeing.

When placing the wood up against the house, on one side of the board I'll have gaps on either ends or the middle. If I flip the board over it will be nice and flush, however the next row of boards is going to have gap issues.

I did a 1/4in gap between the house and board, then did a 2nd row, and as you can see in the pics the gap is not consistent.

This is my first time redoing wood on a porch so I don't know if this is a common occurrence nowadays but the previous wood on the deck was not like this. I have enough pressure from the wife so the last thing I want to do is use all this wood and have these gaps then hear it from here 😂.

I got the wood delivered from Lowe's, so this mighy be my issue, though their fencing was good so I stuck with them for this as well.

I'm honestly thinking about returning all of the wood and going to a local lumber shop. However I must ask - am I being too OCD or am I correct in thinking the gaps will just get worse looking the more I progress with the project?

Code questions on new deck. We had our old deck torn down due to rot and are in the middle of replacement.

The deck is 12x12 and previously the deck had 3 4x4 posts supporting it with diaganol bracing. The new build is using 6x6 support posts placed in from the edges. There is no bracing and they are done except for the railing.

From what I read on North Carolina code for decks the 2 6x6 placed where they are is complaint with code. I think though there is bracing required to be code compliant.

Is my thought correct should there be diaganol bracing on the 6x6 posts?

Are my stairs going to be string enough? I'm going to be adding a middle support and handrails, they're 16 inches apart with a one inch over hang on the side of the tread. Is this enough? I won't be taking anything to heavy up/down them, but I'm a big guy myself already. Should I add a couple more stringers between the existing ones?
