"This is the largest study to date demonstrating an association between induced or augmented childbirth and autism, and the next step is for research to better understand the possible mechanisms behind this relationship," according to a statement from Autism Speaks.

As scientists struggle to understand the causes of autism, a potential new pattern has emerged: The condition is associated with induced or augmented labor, according to a new study. Induction means stimulating contractions before spontaneous labor begins.

What is fluency and why is it important for individuals with autism?

Fluency is the ability to perform skills easily, quickly, and accurately. Before a person with autism can become “fluent” with a skill, he or she must acquire the skill through repeated practice. When skills are fluent, a person is more likely to retain those skills and be able to use them in different settings.
