Bunions, also know as hallux valgus, are a bump that forms on the inside of the big toe joint. The condition is due to a malalignment of the joint in which the big toe begins to drift towards the smaller ones. They can be hereditary or often develop from shoe wear including high heels. In most cases, bunions can be treated by wearing shoes with a wide toe box. When surgery is warranted, there are many different types of procedures to choose from. Traditionally, large incisions are utilized with the need to stay off of the foot for anywhere from 2-6 weeks. With minimally invasive surgery (MIS) most patients are able to bear weight right after the procedure. This becomes very important in locations such as NYC in which being ambulatory is critical.
This brave patient elected to have both of her bunions and hammertoes fixed at the same time due to pain. With minimally invasive surgery, the patient was able to walk out after her surgery. At only 2 months post op, her results are already quite impressive.
