Data shows that the majority of New Yorkers have been and are still experiencing healthcare affordability burdens and delay care due to fear of costs. Even more are worried about affording healthcare in the future.

Economic analyses show that at least 90% of New Yorkers would save money under the NY Health Act.

The NYS Budget would also be greatly alleviated in we already had the NY Health Act. The NY Health Act incorporates a higher tax on the wealthy. It redistributes wealth into care, and it saves money overall, so there would be more money in the NYS Budget for public education, child care, public transport, and other services.

The NY Health Act is a bill in the NYS Legislature that has majority support in both the State Senate and the State Assembly! It is universal, single-payer healthcare for EVERY New Yorker regardless of immigration, employment, marital, income or any other status. Economic studies show it save at least 90% of New Yorkers money - no more choosing between groceries and rent or healthcare and medications. No more co-pays, deductibles, insurance premiums or out-of-pockets costs. No more surprise bills. No more denials. Let’s win this together!

The crisis currently happening in the NYS Budget would be avoided if we already had the - universal, single-payer healthcare that redistributes wealth away from the rich into money for healthcare. The NY Health Act means:

Higher-quality healthcare for patients - for ALL patients regardless of immigration, employment or any other status

Better working conditions for health workers

Better compensation for providers

More money for public schools

More money to end homelessness

More money for the things our communities need.

We would also be inoculated against federal cuts to healthcare.

“Behind every one of the 1,500 uninsured patients we see each year at the free clinic is a story — and a system that failed them. Let’s build one that doesn’t. for universal, single-payer healthcare!”

"As outreach officers for ECHO Free Clinic, we’ve connected with Bronx residents who have gone decades without health care, forced to make the impossible choice between groceries, rent, or a doctor’s visit. The Saturday free clinic ends up being their lifeline in the midst of a broken, segregated, and complex healthcare system.

We dream of a New York where free clinics are relics of the past – where a single working mother doesn’t delay her mammogram to continue supporting her child, where an uncle with diabetes doesn’t ration his insulin to simply make it through the month, where a union worker with a disability gets the long-term care they need without going into debt, where health is a right guaranteed to every person who calls this state home."

“No patient - especially one awaiting a lung transplant - should lose access to essential medication because of cost or insurance barriers. That’s why it is so important that we support the New York Health Act, because your life shouldn’t depend on your insurance.”

This is from Dr. Alex Lê, an internal medicine physician in the Bronx, and a member of the largest and oldest health worker union - Committee of Interns and Residents - SEIU.

Mariana Pineda 1979-2026 leaves behind a legacy of fighting for a better world. Listen to her.

Let Mariana's premature death be the spark you need to finally so no one else suffers & struggles to get care the way she did

Her union job as a public school teacher did not protect her.

When you get too sick to work and lose your job you should not also lose your healthcare and your home.

You should not have to fight an insurance company hoarding hundreds of billions in profits for the care you need.

You should not have to fight against federal cuts to public healthcare funding while your own health is failing.

Your healthcare should not be dependent on your job, ability to pay or any other arbitrary status.

Healthcare should be provided as a public good, guaranteed by law, for all. No exceptions.

Our thanks and credit to Peter Kinoy of for this tribute to Mariana's fight for the NY Health Act and housing justice.
