Spinal Stenosis Basics

▪️ A condition where the space inside the spinal canal narrows and puts pressure on the nerves or spinal cord
▪️ Often develops gradually from bone spurs, herniated or bulging discs, or ligament thickening
▪️ Most common in the lower back and neck
▪️ Symptoms may include pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness in the arms or legs, and in severe cases, difficulty walking or problems with bowel and bladder control

▪️ Also called osteophytes, these are extra bone growths on the vertebrae that form when the body responds to damage or repetitive stress
▪️ Often smooth and symptom-free, but problems occur when they press on nearby structures like spinal nerves
▪️ Symptoms can include numbness, tingling, pain, or muscle weakness in the arms or legs, depending on location
▪️ Diagnosis usually involves a physical exam and imaging such as X-rays or CT scans
▪️ Most cases improve with conservative treatment like NSAIDs, physical therapy, rest, or steroid injections, while surgery is rarely needed

▪️ Refers to radiating pain caused by inflammation at the nerve root as it connects to the spine
