Retinal artery emboli have been linked to facial cosmetic procedures. According to an article published in "The Review of Optometry", researchers at Seoul National University discovered that emboli may be caused by filler injections into peoples faces.

The patients had no underlying systemic diseases and suspect that the emboli reached the brain and thus eyes via the anterior communicating artery and the cutaneous collaterals in the midline. The researchers also found that there was retrograde spreading of the emboli materials resulting in retinal artery occlusions.

While these events are extremely rare, they must be considered when retinal vascular occlusions occur.

COVID-19 Can result in corneal changes that resemble patients with Dry Eye Disease and Diabetes. While there are no published studies on this topic, researchers in Spain have discovered sensory alterations in the cornea after being infected with COVID-19.

These appear as morphological changes causing functional loss and decrease in corneal sensitivity. In some cases there appears to be neuroma-like structures in the subbasal nerve fibers. This small fiber neuropathy can result in decreased corneal sensitivity that can result in neuropathic pain and keratitis.

Fortunately, treatment with Prokera, )amniotic tissue), can help heal and reverse this pathology. If you have had COVID-19, a comprehensive eye exam is recommended to evaluate among other conditions, this corneal disorder.

New research discussed in " The Review of Optometry" has proven the ocular benefits of certain foods including Broccoli, Saffron and nuts. Patients with Cataracts, Glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration as well as other eye disorders can benefit from the addition of certain foods.

Broccoli is an important source of micronutrients and fiber, carotenes, beta carotene, lutein, vitamins A, B, C and E, isothiocyanates, fatty acids and minerals. A daily intake of 375g of broccoli can help protect and heal the eye from many retinal disorders.

Saffron contains crocin isomers, zeaxanthin, lycopene and vitamin B12. It can help in the early stages of macular degeneration improving visual function by reversing damage to the photoreceptors.

Tiger nuts help reduce the signs and symptoms of Dry Eye Disease while Walnuts contain polyphenols which the oxidation process reducing inflammation.

As with all foods a careful balance is always important and must be considered when taking certain medications. Consulting with your doctor before increasing anything in volume in a must.

Recent studies conducted on COVID patients discovered retinal microvascular abnormalities and impaired blood flow in people that had recovered from COVID. Frequently, these retinal abnormalities were asymptomatic and devoid of any other clinical signs.

The findings included microhemorrhages, retinal vascular tortuosity, cotton wool spots and hyper reflective plaques in the ganglion layer of the retina, These retinal signs were more significant in patients that suffered from hypertension.

While these clinical signs were clinically relevant, the only treatment rendered was observation unless there were secondary or visual changes. Further studies need to be conducted to determine the correlation between COVID and these findings and potential therapies. This study was performed in Singapore and now additional research is being done in Italy.

Dry eye disease affects 62% of adults in the US and often goes undiagnosed and treated. Treatment often includes Restasis, topical steroids and Amniotic tissue ( Prokera). A recent study published in the " Review of Optometry" concluded that in some cases the addition of oral vitamin B can dramatically improve the condition.

Researchers in China found that adding vitamin B and mecobalamin to one's diet in addition to the other therapies resulted in a decrease in symptoms, foreign body sensation, burning, fluctuating vision and an increase in tear break up time and patient satisfaction.

A well balanced diet is always important and eating the proper amount of fruits and vegetables will give individuals the correct amount of these much needed nutrients.

Parkinson's Disease results in many physical and emotional changes that can be life altering. For many years, these patients have suffered visual abnormalities and discomfort that have gone undiagnosed and treated. Recent studies published in " The Review of Optometry" discussed options that in many cases dramatically improve people's visual comfort.

Often, due to muscular changes and imbalances, Parkinson patients suffer from misaligned eyes that result in very mild double vision and asthenopia. Proper evaluation and then prescribing prism in the eye glasses frequently completely resolve the visual discomfort.

The key to helping Parkinson patients is a comprehensive ocular evaluation, testing and then prescribing accordingly as needed.

Autism may be detected during an eye exam with children. Studies recently published in " The Review of Optometry" indicated significant relationships between retinal nerve fiber thinning, larger optic discs, cup diameter and ASD.

The study conducted in Hong Kong used retinal images from a retinal camera and compared the results to standard photos of control patients. There was a statistically significant relationship between these retinal findings and ASD. Further studies are needed, but when ASD is considered, a comprehensive eye exam with retinal photos may help with a diagnosis.

Certain acne medications can induce dry eye disease and corneal remodeling. Retinoid Isotretinoin is a common ingredient in many acne medications, but can contribute to dry eye disease by inducing epithelial thickening and stromal thinning.

These anatomical changes negatively effect goblet cell density which produce mucin to help improve the quality of the tears. Also, altering the epithelium releases MMP 9 which is an inflammatory mediator.

If you take acne medication and experience any dry eye disease symptoms, call for an evaluation. There are many great treatments

A new treatment for Macular Degeneration may be here soon. Studies recently published in the " Review of Optometry" discussed promising results using a polysaccharide called fucoidan found in brown seaweed. It helped protect the eye against environmental influences.

The studies showed that there was VEGEF inhibition and protected against oxidative stresses. That reduced damaging blood vessel growth in macular degeneration patients. These studies will be another weapon to be used in AMD patients.

A recent study published in EYENET magazine regarding research conducted at the University of North Carolina, stated that the use of statins and cholesterol lowering medications results in Dry Eye Disease. According to their conclusions, there was an increase of 40% in dry eye disease when statins were prescribed and a 60% increase with cholesterol medications.

While these therapies are important and required, when employed, if the patient experiences any dry eye symptoms, they should be evaluated for dry eye disease treatment as well. Untreated dry eyes can result in damage to the outer layer of the eye as well as decreased visual acuity.

According to " Ocular Surgery News," Dietary supplements can improve visual acuity and reduce the likelihood of contracting and the severity of Macular Generation. Dr John Nolan has studied this topic for 20 years and he stated that carotenoids such as lutein, zeaxanthin and meso-zeaxanthin help protect the retina as anti-oxidants and improve visual acuity.

These carotenoids also increase the concentration of macular pigment resulting in the improved retinal health and vision. These carotenoids are 3 of 7009 and can be found in spinach, kale and corn.

Demodex blepheritis is a lid disease caused by mites residing at the base of the lashes in the lids. Upon examination, it presents with collarettes or dandruff at the lash base and results in dry eye disease symptoms, red, inflamed lids and burning eyes. According to " Ocular Surgery News" 84% of people 60 years or older have Demodex infestation and 100% of people 70 years old or older suffer from it.

While lid hygiene is critical in the treatment of this infestation, in office therapies are also required to remediate this disease. If you have red, burning lids and/or dry eyes , call us to make an appointment for an evaluation.
