How do two strangers, decades apart in age, meet — let alone become good friends?
Kira, 30, and Kamal, 84, were paired through DOROT’s Friendly Visiting program in 2022. Their weekly visits often include lively discussions about movies, with Kamal sharing his love of film noir and Kira enjoying the historical and cultural context he includes about the movies he loves.
They talk about their different cultural backgrounds—Kamal’s Indian heritage and Kira’s Japanese heritage—and a shared love for exploring other cultures through food. Sometimes they work on a new recipe together.
Over time, these moments of connection have grown into a meaningful friendship across generations.
Every Friendly Visiting pair is different. But behind each one is DOROT’s social work team, matching volunteers and older adults in a process that’s part instinct, part formula, and great deal of care. It’s the art of making friends.
