Created in 2009 by trans advocate Rachel Crandall, was designed to celebrate and uplift transgender, non-binary, and gender expansive folks 🩷

However, amid increasingly aggressive and exhausting anti-transgender legislation and rhetoric, the idea of “visibility” can bring up conflicting feelings. Is visibility safe? Is it a choice? How do we protect our most vulnerable community members?

Every feeling - be it fear, determination, anger, joy, or confusion - is valid. Processing our feelings with trusted community members and allies is important in caring for our mental wellness so that we can continue to show up for our transgender and gender expansive loved ones, neighbors, and youth. And if you are seeking additional support, please do not hesitate to reach out to us at gfp@ackerman.org or learn more at www.genderandfamilyproject.org .

However you wish to celebrate today, you are seen. We wish everyone a safe, affirming Transgender Day Of Visibility 🏳️‍⚧️

“When I was younger, I wish I would have been told more often that I was right and nothing was wrong with me, that I was deserving of everything this world has to offer, and that my visions for my future were worthy of pursuit.” -Janet Mock (she/her), Transgender Rights Activist

On Thursday, one of the most extreme anti-transgender laws in the United States took effect in Kansas, invalidating changed gender markers on transgender Kansans driver’s licenses and birth certificates and barring transgender people from using restrooms that align with their gender identity and presentation ❤️‍🩹

The law was put into effect with no grace period, leaving at least 1,700 affected Kansans with invalid IDs. In addition to the cruelty of erasing transgender identities, the law will effectively out transgender people whenever they interact with law enforcement or apply for a job or housing.

“The persecution is the point,” said Rep. Abi Boatman, Kansas’ only trans state legislator, in a statement to the Star on Wednesday. “It tells me that Kansas Republicans are interested in being on the vanguard of the culture war and in a race to the bottom,” she added in a comment to KCTV.

At least two Kansans have already filed a lawsuit in court, supported by the ACLU.

Trans people affected are required to replace their state identification at their own expense.
