When grooming spaces are not accommodating, it can lead to anxiety, isolation, and trauma for those simply trying to receive everyday services.

That’s why we continue engaging with state leaders and agencies to advocate for sensory-aware training and more inclusive grooming environments across New Jersey.

Thank you to the New Jersey Council on Developmental Disabilities (NJCDD) for the opportunity to testify and for the work you are doing to shape a stronger future for individuals with disabilities.

We are also grateful to the disability advocates, families, and community members who continue to show up and push this work forward together.

Meet Iyanna, one of our Youth Ambassadors and a member of our very first cohort. đź’ś

Iyanna is a freshman at Lawrence High School with dreams of working in the cosmetology industry as a hairstylist. One of the reasons she joined the Sensory Safe-Cuts Youth Ambassador Program is because she wants to be prepared to work with clients of all abilities, including individuals with autism, ADHD, and sensory sensitivities.

Her perspective is a powerful reminder that the next generation of beauty and grooming professionals cares about creating more inclusive spaces.

We’re so proud to have Iyanna as part of this movement and can’t wait to see all that she accomplishes.

It was a wonderful opportunity connecting with Dr. Benson Kahiu, co-founder of RoKah LLC, a company providing private-pay home care and services for clients with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

We had a great conversation around the work both of our organizations are doing to support individuals and families in the community, including access to services, outreach, and building resources that truly cater to people's needs.

We appreciate the thoughtful exchange and look forward to continuing the conversation and exploring ways to move this important work forward together.

A big thank you to our wonderful Youth Ambassadors, Campbell and Iyanna, for joining us to table at the Student Services Resource Fair at Lawrence High School on March 7th.

Your support, energy, and willingness to help share the mission of Sensory Safe Cuts made a meaningful difference.

It’s inspiring to see young leaders stepping up and helping us spread awareness about the importance of inclusive, sensory-aware barbershops, hair salons, and grooming spaces.

We’re grateful to have you both as part of the Sensory Safe-Cuts community.

When people think about sensory challenges in barbershops and salons, they often picture a small child.

But sensory sensitivities don’t disappear with age.
And they’re not limited to one gender.

In this conversation, a mom shares how her son struggled with haircuts from childhood into his teenage years.

What changed wasn’t his age.
What changed was the environment.
The approach and the relationship.

A barber who slowed down, who greeted him like a friend, who made space for connection before starting the cut.

She also reminds us that this isn’t just about boys. Her daughter experienced similar challenges around hair care too.

Sensory needs don’t have a “look.”
They don’t have an age limit.
And they don’t belong to one gender.

That’s why training matters. That’s why awareness matters. And that’s why we’re advocating for statewide sensory-informed education for grooming professionals.💜💚

Thank you to everyone who attended last night’s Community Meeting with the Sensory Safe-Cuts team.

We had a great turnout, thoughtful questions, and meaningful dialogue around sensory processing needs in our barbershops and salons.

It was encouraging seeing families, individuals, and community members coming together around this issue; not just to talk about the challenges, but to think about how to make ourselves available for the solutions.

This is how change starts.
With conversation.
With collaboration.
With community.

We’re focused, And we’re committed to continuing this work across New Jersey.

If you missed it, stay connected ; there’s more ahead.
