Q&A with Dr. Loewinger

Q: Can the flu increase heart attack risks?

A: Everyone hates to get the flu, but most people don’t think about the effects of the flu on their heart. The flu dehydrates you through sweating and vomiting and other mechanisms. Dehydration puts strain on your heart and makes you more vulnerable to heart attacks. Everyone with heart disease or major heart disease risk factors like diabetes needs to get a flu shot.
