How do we move brain–computer interfaces from the lab into the real world?

That’s the question Jayme Strauss, Chief Clinical Officer at Precision Neuroscience will explore at the 4th International Conference on Artificial Intelligence in Epilepsy and Neurological Disorders.

Jayme will present “BCI Beyond the Lab: Scalable Cortical Interfaces for Real-World Decoding” during the Decoding and Encoding Brain Signals session on March 17th at 8:50 AM. The session will highlight how advances in scalable cortical interfaces and AI are helping translate brain–computer interface research into practical, real-world applications for neurological disorders.

If you’re attending the conference, be sure to stop by and join the conversation. Learn more about the event: https://www.aiepilepsy-neuro.com/?culture=en-GB

“When can I download languages, and also, when can I upload my memories so I don’t ever forget anything?”.

These are some of the topics poised by Henry Blodget on a recent episode of Solutions. Precision Neuroscience CEO Michael Mager dispels some of the myths around brain-computer interfaces (BCIs), explains how BCIs actually work, where they’re currently being used in real-world settings, and how they’ll potentially change the lives of people living with neurological conditions.

Every thought you have — a memory, an idea, a moment of inspiration — creates a real electrical signal in the brain.

At Precision Neuroscience, we’re developing a next-generation brain-computer interface designed to capture that activity directly at its source. By translating neural signals into a digital pathway, we aim to decode what those signals mean and connect them to computers, phones, and other digital devices.

This will enable thought-driven interaction with digital tools, opening new possibilities for the millions of people living with severe neurological conditions.

Brain-computer interfaces are redefining what’s possible in medical technology — and reshaping how humans connect with the world around them. At Precision Neuroscience, we’re developing a BCI system designed to help people who are unable to interact with the digital world regain independence — from communicating and returning to work, to fully engaging with their loved ones and everyday life.

This work goes beyond innovation — it’s about helping people reconnect, reengage, and reclaim their place in the world. Learn more about the work Precision Neuroscience is doing here: https://precisionneuro.io/

Our mission is to deliver life-changing brain–computer interface technology to millions of people. For individuals living with severe neurological conditions such as ALS, stroke, and spinal cord injury, the loss of movement and the ability to communicate freely, make independent choices, and fully participate in daily life can be profoundly isolating — not just physically, but emotionally and socially.

Precision Neuroscience is reshaping how people whose lives have been affected by neurological conditions connect with the world around them.

Every day, caregivers across the country wake up with one purpose: to make life safer, more comfortable, and better for someone in their care. Caregivers provide essential support to individuals who need assistance with daily living activities, medical needs, or ongoing care due to aging, illness, injury, or disability. Their work is deeply personal — and profoundly impactful.

On National Caregivers Day, Precision Neuroscience recognizes and honors all caregivers for their critical contributions to our families, friends, communities, and our healthcare system. Whether by profession or by love, caregivers demonstrate extraordinary compassion, resilience, and dedication every single day.

For most of human history, the brain has been a black box. We've inferred what's happening inside it. We've never been able to see it directly. That's changing.

Precision Neuroscience CEO Michael Mager joined Solutions with Henry Blodget to discuss the moment we're in: brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) are moving from academic prototypes to clinically available products. The brain is being digitized and what comes next will reshape both medicine and computing.

Medical imaging revolutionized diagnosis. Genomics revolutionized treatment. Brain activity data is next.

The human cortex is a complex landscape of “hills” (gyri) and “valleys” (sulci). Traditional ECoG arrays are typically rigid and limited in recording density, which restricts their ability to capture critical functional data from within the brain’s sulci.

A recent case study published in the "Journal of Neurosurgery: Case Lessons" highlights what may be a meaningful shift in that capability.

During a complex tumor resection at The Mount Sinai Hospital, surgeons deployed two of Precision Neuroscience’s Layer 7 µECoG arrays. Because these arrays are ultra-thin and flexible, they were able to conform into the sulci and record a phase reversal at 400-micron resolution from within the central sulcus — a critical boundary between the sensory and motor cortices.

At Precision Neuroscience, we’re developing a thin, flexible cortical interface designed to conform to the brain’s natural anatomy. Unlike traditional rigid or penetrating arrays, our conformable surface interface integrates with the brain’s contours, enabling high-fidelity data capture in regions that have historically been difficult to assess. We believe this approach has the potential to advance the standard of care and help power the next generation of brain-computer interface innovation.

This work reflects what’s possible when thoughtful innovation meets true clinical collaboration and research. We’re deeply grateful to Dr. Daniel Cummins, Dr. Joshua Bederson, and the Mount Sinai Health System team for their partnership — and especially to the patient whose participation made this research possible

Read the study below.

BACKGROUND Central sulcus identification using phase reversal on electrocorticography (ECoG) is a critical tool for neurosurgical intervention around the primary motor and somatosensory cortices. This mapping is typically performed using cortical arrays with a resolution of several millimeters. OBSE...
