Blanton-Peale Institute & Counseling Center Blanton-Peale Institute & Counseling Center provides affordable holistic mental health care to people

The Blanton-Peale Institute and Counseling Center is an accredited post-graduate educational institute and mental health service organization founded in 1937 by Rev. Dr. Norman Vincent Peale of New York City’s Marble Collegiate Church and psychiatrist Dr. Smiley Blanton who had trained in analysis in Vienna with Sigmund Freud. The Institute was established to bring together the insights of psychology and psychiatry and the wisdom of the great spiritual traditions to address the spiritual and psychological problems of contemporary life. To this end the Institute offers both licensure and non-licensure qualifying training programs that incorporate a lively dialogue between psychology and spirituality in a manner that is non-sectarian and open to multiple faith traditions.

Curiosity is where growth begins. As Smiley Blanton reminds us, a questioning mind is the first classroom of emotional insight, resilience, and self-understanding. At Blanton-Peale, we believe nurturing curiosity about your inner world is a powerful step toward healing and transformation.

Voices that built the foundation. Stories that carry the mission forward.

At Blanton-Peale, it’s more than an institute, it’s a space where purpose meets people, and where every conversation has the power to change a life.

Grateful to learn from those who continue to shape what this work looks like every day.

Celebrating the women who helped shape modern psychology and psychoanalysis. From understanding childhood development to challenging traditional theories and expanding conversations around culture, identity, and mental health, pioneers like Anna Freud, Karen Horney, Margaret Mahler, Beverly Greene, and Inez Beverly Prosser transformed the field and opened doors for more inclusive and compassionate approaches to mental well-being. Their work continues to influence how we understand the human mind today. 🤍💚💜

“Each generation must discover its mission.”
Frantz Fanon taught us that liberation is not just political, it is psychological. As a psychiatrist and revolutionary thinker, he revealed how colonialism and racism shape identity, self-worth, and mental health, showing that oppression does not only control land but also the mind. His legacy lives in every movement that challenges structural racism and reclaims dignity, reminding us that healing is inseparable from justice and that to decolonize is to restore our full humanity.

Our Story

Blanton-Peale Institute & Counseling Center provides affordable holistic mental health care to people representing the full diversity of New York City. Blanton-Peale further amplifies our impact by training mental health professionals, community- and faith-based leaders, and other caring people with the tools of psychology, mental health, and spirituality.

Many New Yorkers today face devastating mental health challenges. Whether it be sexual assault, domestic violence, school shootings, teen anxiety, racism or poverty, mental health is in the news every day. We face a mental health crisis, but Blanton-Peale is doing something about it.

In December 2017, we opened a new second floor, and began doubling our support for New Yorkers who need affordable, holistic mental health care. The new second floor also provides classroom space for our training programs to thrive.
