New The New York Times reporting details how nursing home executives donated nearly $4.8 million to a pro-Trump super PAC shortly before securing a private meeting with President Trump, where they personally urged repeal of the federal minimum staffing rule. Within weeks, the administration stopped defending the rule in court and, months later, approved a full revocation, parroting industry arguments about cost and workforce challenges. The investigation highlights the unusual degree of donor access and influence granted to nursing home executives, even as research suggests the rule could have saved thousands of lives each year.

A bankruptcy judge approved the sale of Genesis HealthCare’s assets to bidder 101 West Street, even as court proceedings raised serious concerns about the buyers and financing behind the deal. Testimony revealed that the purchasers may rely on a $35 million loan from an operator currently facing state-led nursing home fraud cases, and that one of the buyer’s affiliated ventures owns facilities averaging just over two stars for quality.

The scramble among multiple investors to acquire a bankrupt nursing home chain underscores a stark contradiction: despite industry claims of razor-thin margins, distressed nursing home assets continue to attract aggressive and well-financed bidders.

🔎 LTCCC Alert: Federal Data Indicate That the Average US Nursing Home is 25% Short-Staffed

🔹 9 in 10 nursing homes are operating below expected staffing levels, with the average facility under-staffed by 25% on a daily basis.
🔹 The average U.S. nursing home provided over one hour LESS nursing staff time per resident per day than the expected time necessary to meet resident needs (3.78 total nurse staff hours per resident day (HPRD) provided vs 4.95 HPRD needed).
🔹 Staffing deficits on weekends were even higher, averaging 31%. [Note: nursing homes get paid the same amount every day to provide sufficient staffing to meet their residents’ needs.]
🔹 Contract staff usage continues to decline since the COVID pandemic, to a rate of 6% (down from a peak of 10.5% in Q3 2022).
🔹 35% report zero medical director time, despite the MD’s responsibilities for overseeing clinical care in every US nursing home.
