⏲️ 60 seconds drug review: Common Side Effects 💊

💊 All drugs are associated with adverse effects. Some of these adverse effects are common and expected, some are serious and require discontinuation, while others are due to interactions with substances such as alcohol.

🧠 Familiarity with potential side effects is essential for patient education and to help minimize patient concerns.

📝 Often, patients show up with complaints related to a new medication. Check out today's quiz to see if you can think of some medications that are associated with a common side effect.

🌟 Tips for counseling on these side effects:

👉🏻 Constipation: ensure the patient is on a bowel regimen when starting these medications (ex: docusate, senna)

👉🏻 Dry cough: switch to an alternative class (ARBs have a less incidence of dry cough)

👉🏻 Orangish discoloration of urine: educate patients that this effect is harmless and will go away after they stop taking the drug

👉🏻 Disulfiram-like reaction when taken with alcohol: avoid alcohol while taking this medication and for 3 days after the last dose. This includes alcohol in mouthwash or cough or cold syrups.

👉🏻 Severe diarrhea: ensure patient is on an anti-diarrheal medication such as loperamide while taking this drug

👉🏻 Myopathies and rhabdomyolysis: if severe, discontinuation of the drug and switch to an alternative medication

👉🏻 Dry mouth, constipation, urinary retention: often these side effects are wanted to treat a symptom (ex: urinary incontinence). If so, monitor for other anticholinergic side effects and if the patient is not tolerating then switch to an alternative medication.

Let’s talk about… your study style ✏️

Studying, especially in nursing school, is never one-size-fits-all. We all learn and process information differently, which is why it’s SO important to figure out what kind of learner you are before you jump in!

Working WITH your personality and style is so much easier than working AGAINST yourself when it comes to lectures, notes, or hands-on education.

What’s your study style?!?

Cushing’s syndrome often means excess cortisol—think moon face, central obesity, and skin changes. Nurses need to monitor vitals, glucose, infection signs, and support emotional health too.

Oh what a year... Many people talk about how getting through nursing school is the hardest part, but not enough people talk about what comes after. Finishing school doesn't mean the challenges are over, in some ways they're just beginning. One of the hardest moments was not passing the NCLEX on my first try. After years of studying, clinicals, and preceptorship, it felt devastating to fall short when I wanted so badly to step into my new position at a nearby hospital. But it also reminded me that setbacks don't define me, how I overcome them does.
Luckily, my new job was able to postpone my start date and last Friday I informed them I officially passed the nclex
Between working and going to nursing school full time, standing by family and friends during difficult times, and mourning the loss of my grandmother this past year, I can truly say I have been tested in more ways than one. None of it would have been possible without my loved ones, whose encouragement and support gave me hope and strength. I know my grandmother would be so proud
