Brain Injury Research Center of Mount Sinai (BIRC-MS) We conduct cutting-edge research with a primary focus on addressing the challenges of living with TBI

The Brain Injury Research Center of Mount Sinai (BIRC-MS) conducts research addressing the challenges of traumatic brain injury, or TBI. Our recent research has focused on testing the effectiveness of treatment interventions on the cognitive, emotional and behavioral functioning of people with brain injuries. We are also involved in several activities aimed at better identifying people with “hidden” brain injuries – where people have disabilities due to a brain injury, but are unaware of the causal link between an injury to the brain they have experienced and current problems in daily life. We share our research results with others through outreach to the field, sharing information with people with disabilities and their families, training future researchers and taking actions to affect policy.

Have you or your romantic partner been diagnosed with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) or Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRDs) within the past 6 months? You may be eligible for Resilient Together, a couples-based research study exploring the effects of programs to promote adjustment following diagnosis.

Researchers at the Brain Injury Research Center at Mount Sinai Hospital are conducting a research study (STUDY-24-00633) examining two programs for couples in the first six months following one partner’s diagnosis of mild cognitive impairment or dementia. Participation in this study includes completing individual online surveys (30–60 minutes each) about health and relationship experiences before and after the program, as well as participating together as a couple in one of two programs focused on common stressors and coping strategies. Couples will be randomly assigned to either 1) six weekly 30–60-minute live video sessions with a study psychologist, or 2) a self-guided informational pamphlet completed independently. All study activities are completed remotely. Participants will each receive $80 ($160 per couple).

Have you experienced physical violence from a partner that resulted in an injury to your face, head, or neck? This could include blows to the head or neck, repetitive injuries, or choking. Your participation in our research study could help improve brain health for individuals who have experienced brain injury from intimate partner violence.

The Brain Injury Research Center at Mount Sinai is currently seeking individuals who have experienced physical violence by a partner, with at least one year since the most recent injury, and who can travel to New York City for a 4-5 hour study visit. A study visit will include a brief set of thinking tests, an interview with surveys, a blood draw, a brief assessment about your physical health, and an MRI scan. NEW FINDINGS from the New York Traumatic Brain Injury Model System Study! Our team developed Online EmReg, a telehealth group intervention that helps people with develop skills to effectively regulate their emotions and behavioral responses.

In our newly published randomized controlled trial, Online EmReg led to SIGNIFICANT IMPROVEMENTS in (1) emotion regulation (2) life satisfaction (3) executive functioning (4) affect

This work builds on years of funded research, beginning with the in person EmReg program and later adapting it for telehealth. Dr. Kajankova & her team are now training clinicians to bring this intervention to more people living with . Full Article: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/41162348/

By delivering care remotely, we can expand access to evidence based rehabilitation for individuals facing barriers to in person treatment and support better long term outcomes after TBI.
