Brain Injury Research Center of Mount Sinai (BIRC-MS) We conduct cutting-edge research with a primary focus on addressing the challenges of living with TBI

The Brain Injury Research Center of Mount Sinai (BIRC-MS) conducts research addressing the challenges of traumatic brain injury, or TBI. Our recent research has focused on testing the effectiveness of treatment interventions on the cognitive, emotional and behavioral functioning of people with brain injuries. We are also involved in several activities aimed at better identifying people with “hidden” brain injuries – where people have disabilities due to a brain injury, but are unaware of the causal link between an injury to the brain they have experienced and current problems in daily life. We share our research results with others through outreach to the field, sharing information with people with disabilities and their families, training future researchers and taking actions to affect policy.

CONGRATULATIONS to BIRC Faculty Dr. Raj Kumar for receiving the ACRM Dr. Joshua B. Cantor Scholar Award. This annual honor, given by ACRM’s Brain Injury Interdisciplinary Special Interest Group, recognizes substantial contributions to brain injury neurorehabilitation and celebrates Dr. Cantor’s legacy as a former BIRC faculty member whose work significantly advanced our understanding of life after TBI.

Please also join us in congratulating former BIRC Clinical Research Coordinator Ariel Pruyser, now a PhD candidate at the University of Houston, for receiving an ACRM Poster Award.

Our team at the BIRC-MS found that chronic traumatic encephalopathy was RARE among individuals with isolated brain injuries or less extensive head impacts. While most studies focused on male American-football players, our study used a representative community cohort.

Findings show that is linked primarily to extensive repetitive head impact.
Public discourse often blurs , head impacts, and CTE, fueling confusion and fear among people who have experienced brain trauma.

This work, led by Dr. Dams-O’Connor and PhD candidate, Enna Selmanovic, underscores why community-based research with individuals with different head trauma histories is essential to accurately assess risk and move the conversation from assumption to evidence.

On , we are proud to share that BIRC faculty Dr. Maria Kajankova and Dr. Kristen Dams-O’Connor were part of the consensus team that developed new diagnostic criteria for mild TBI (concussion), an enormous milestone for research and care!

These criteria, developed through rapid evidence reviews, expert consensus, and public input, unify how mild TBI is defined across the lifespan and in sports, civilian trauma, and military settings
