We were proud to join leaders from across New York in celebrating this year’s honorees, Gala Keynote Speaker Derrick Johnson, President & CEO of the NAACP, and Dr. Hazel N. Dukes Legacy of Leadership Award recipient Karen Boykin-Towns, Vice Chair of the NAACP National Board of Directors and a member of the VNS Health Board.

Karen’s leadership and lifelong commitment to equity and community uplift reflect the values that guide VNS Health’s work across New York. We are grateful for her voice, her service, and her partnership.

When Queens Home Care Branch Director Pearline realized that one of her patients didn’t have the support he needed at home, she took matters into her own hands. “The support he had wasn’t enough for us to do our job safely, so I committed to partnering with these outside organizations [the patient’s health plan and visiting doctor’s office]. If we couldn’t meet these needs, he should go back to a skilled nursing facility. But he didn’t want that — and we didn’t want it, either.”

- Elizabeth Tyler: VNS Health's first African American nurse
- Edith Carter: The second Black nurse at VNS Health, and the first Black nurse to provide primary maternal and infant care in New York City
- Jessie Sleet Scales: The first African American Public Health Nurse
