Did you know prevention saves lives — and money?

Cancer screenings and preventive care have helped avert millions of deaths in the U.S. over the past decades. Many of these are due to early detection and vaccination.

Every dollar spent on prevention can return multiple dollars in health benefits and cost savings.

Preventive services like blood pressure checks, vaccines, and routine screenings help find health issues early — when they’re easier to treat and less costly.

But too many people still miss out on these services. BCHN encourages you to talk to your health providers, stay up to date on screenings, and make prevention part of your family’s health plan!

The HPV vaccine provides strong protection against the strains of HPV that cause most cervical cancers. Yet despite these powerful prevention tools, thousands of people in the U.S. are diagnosed with cervical cancer each year. Many face barriers to timely screening and follow-up care—barriers that can cost lives. Increasing access to vaccination, regular screenings, and equitable care can make a real difference. Prevention saves lives. Preventive care matters.

January is Thyroid Awareness Month, and it’s a great time to check in on your health as we start a new year. The thyroid may be small, but it plays a big role in how your body works—affecting energy levels, metabolism, heart health, mood, and more.

Millions of people live with thyroid conditions and don’t even know it because symptoms like fatigue, weight changes, anxiety, or feeling unusually hot or cold can be easy to overlook. That’s why preventive care and regular check-ups are so important.

As we focus on healthy beginnings this year, remember to listen to your body and speak with your healthcare provider if something doesn’t feel right. Early detection can make a meaningful difference in long-term health and well-being.

This December, we recognize the International Day of Persons with Disabilities and honor the strength, contributions, and dignity of people with disabilities in our community and around the world. More than 1.3 billion people globally live with a disability, reminding us how important it is to remove barriers and create spaces, especially in health care, where everyone can fully participate. Together, we can build a more accessible, respectful, and inclusive health system where every person feels heard, supported, and valued.

🌿 Eat Healthier, Exercise More: Live an Optimal Life!

On September 9th, our BCHN team hosted another “Eat Healthier, Exercise More: Live an Optimal Life!” session with a community walk from Montefiore Family Health Center to Poe Park. Led by Health Educator Pedro Gonzalez, participants enjoyed movement, connection, and a wellness discussion on nutrition and physical activity. Let's not forget to mention all participants were given Health Bucks – $2 coupons provided by the NYC Health Department to encourage the purchase of fresh fruits and vegetables at the Poe Park GreenMarket.
