"Why do I have to skip breakfast before my surgery?"

Fasting before a procedure can be frustrating, but it is one of the most vital things you can do for your own safety. When you are under anesthesia, your body's natural protective reflexes—like coughing or swallowing—are temporarily paused. Keeping your stomach empty of food prevents anything from traveling in the wrong direction into your lungs.

Your Nurse Anesthesiologist takes these fasting rules seriously because keeping you perfectly safe is our number one priority. Always follow the specific food and drink cut-off times provided by your care team!
